Apply for Leadership McKinney

General Information

Leadership McKinney offers a challenging educational experience designed to develop an awareness of the McKinney community and its relationship with the Metroplex, and to provide personal leadership training. At the conclusion of the program, participants will be better prepared to seek leadership roles in business and in the community. Eligibility Candidates must live and/or work in McKinney or its incorporated extraterritorial jurisdiction.

Attendance is expected at all sessions. The overnight retreat in August is mandatory – if an applicant cannot attend the retreat they cannot participate in the program. Classes meet the first Thursday of each month (with a few noted exceptions – see application), September through May, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Candidates must be willing to commit to these time requirements.

If applicable, it is important that the applicant’s employer is committed to allowing the prospective class member the time off necessary to complete the graduation requirements.

Selection Criteria

Participants in Leadership McKinney are chosen through an application and selection process. The purpose of this process is to assure a mix of people from diverse backgrounds and experiences who represent a cross section of the community. Criteria for selection includes:

  • A history of involvement or a strong desire to become actively involved in the community.
  • An interest in personal leadership development and community issues.
  • A commitment to program requirements.
  • A willingness to serve the McKinney community after graduation by assuming greater leadership.
Tuition

Tuition is $800 for Chamber Members and $900 for non-Members.

All fees are due upon acceptance into the program and no later than August 12. Make checks payable to: McKinney Chamber of Commerce

Tuition, with additional funds provided by contributions, covers meals, course materials, transportation, and retreat lodging. Additional program costs are subsidized by corporate and alumni contributions. Scholarships

A limited number of scholarships are available to persons not otherwise able to provide tuition expenses. The applicant must include, with the program application, a letter explaining their financial need and why they are interested in participating in the program.

Attendance Requirements

Attendance at the overnight retreat in August is mandatory, no exceptions. Each participant is expected to attend every session in its entirety and all other required activities. A missed class day can never be fully made up and specific requirements must be met to graduate. NOTE: Circumstances may arise requiring an absence. Participants who miss more than two class sessions or the equivalent hours will not graduate.
